Megan S Peters Photography – Small Business Story

I recently interviewed Megan S Peters to find out all about her photography business and what she loves about Austin. I have also been lucky enough to have her take photos of my family and can tell you that she does really beautiful work.

Tell me about your business. Megan S Peters Photography is a portrait and event photography business specializing in couples and families. I also love photographing births and the beautiful bonding that happens after birth.

How did you get into your business? I launched my business in 2013 after becoming a mother and realizing that I wanted to pursue a more flexible career. I’ve always loved photographing children and families and I realized this is the perfect time in my life to take the plunge and create a business. I enjoy the creativity that photography offers as well as the flexibility for my family life.

Why Austin? Austin is my home and I love our unique way of life. The majority of my photography is outdoors and I love capturing those unique spots around town that mean so much to Austinites. You can’t beat a Sunday afternoon at Barton Springs followed by a stop at your favorite food trailer. Some of my personal favorites are Flip Happy Crepes and Holy Cacao.

Do you use promotional products? Yes, I frequently use mini business cards to share my contact information. I also use the business cards as part of my packaging for clients.

How has social media changed your business? Because I have recently launched, it has been a part of my business from the beginning. As my business grows, I intend to use more social media outlets to promote it. I would really like to get Twitter going and there are other photography specific outlets like 500px and Onexposure that I have been looking into but haven’t started yet.

What is your favorite social media outlet for your business? Facebook is a great resource for expanding my reach to potential clients. When I post photos that I have taken of clients, their friends and family see them and it is an easy way for me to expand my reach in Austin. The Facebook analytics have been helpful to understand which specific photos of mine receive the most positive feedback. Through Facebook I also link to my blog which allows potential clients to see more of my work and more about my business.

What other ways do you market your business? I would like to do events, I haven’t done any yet. I volunteer through my business and have offered gift certificates through events for local non profits. This is one way for me to get my business name out to new groups of potential clients and also give back to the community at the same time.

What is your favorite local business? Oh gosh, I have so many! The first one that came to mind is Paco’s Tacos. They are in my neighborhood and my family eats there on a regular basis. We love the food, the service and the outdoor patio.

Any advice for other aspiring business owners? It takes guts to launch a business but in the end it can be really rewarding. I have learned so much about myself and about the many hats that it’s necessary to wear when starting a new business. One thing that is absolutely necessary no matter what type of business you are starting is good customer service. Providing new customers and potential customers good service is one of the most important things when starting out.

What else do you want to share about your business? In the next few months I will be offering mini sessions for couples and families. I find that families like to use these mini sessions for photos to use to for holiday cards. Look for more information on prices and available dates on my website and Facebook page.

I may be biased, because she is my niece, but she is a special lady, terrific Mom and fantastic photographer.
